Tesco acquired 78 discount supermarkets in 2003 via the acquisition of C Two-Network. These stores are concentrated in and around Metropolitan Tokyo. In Tokyo, customers like to shop for small amounts of extremely fresh food, every day. Existing hypermarket formats don't meet the needs of local customers, so Tesco's entry into the Japanese market was through the acquisition of a discount supermarket operator specialising in packaged groceries.
In August 2004, Tesco expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of 25 Fre'c stores, a neighbourhood supermarket chain located in Chiba and Saitama, specialising in packaged groceries and fresh food. In October 2005, Tesco further expanded its store network with the acquisition of 8 Tanekin stores in the Nerima area of Tokyo.
Tesco Japan employs 3,300 in Japan, and now trades from 109 stores.
Effective September 18 2007, C TWO-NETWORK CO., LTD. has altered its corporate name to TESCO JAPAN.
